Below-ground protection: Corten’s patina needs wet-dry cycling to form properly. Steel that is permanently buried in damp soil may not develop a stable patina and can corrode like ordinary steel. We recommend applying a bituminous or epoxy coating to any section of corten that will be below ground level.
Drainage: As with any retaining wall, adequate drainage behind the structure is essential. Install agricultural drain pipe at the base of the wall and use free-draining gravel backfill to prevent water pooling against the steel.
