When builders and landscapers refer to “H channel steel posts,” they’re typically talking about Universal Column (UC) sections used as retaining wall posts. The H-shaped profile—two parallel flanges connected by a web—creates a natural channel for timber or concrete sleepers to slide into. At RW Steel Victoria, we supply galvanised H channel posts in every common size, ready for delivery across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
What Is an H Channel Steel Post?
An H channel post is a steel section with an I-shaped or H-shaped cross-section. In Australia, these are manufactured as Universal Columns (UC) to AS/NZS 3679.1. The flanges on each side of the web create a channel that grips the edges of sleepers, holding them in place without additional fixings. This simple, elegant design is why H channel posts have been the standard for sleeper retaining walls for decades.
You’ll sometimes see these posts called H-beams, H-posts, H-section posts or steel channels. While there are technical differences between UC sections and Parallel Flange Channels (PFC), the principle is the same: a galvanised steel profile that slots sleepers in securely.
UC vs PFC: Which Profile for Retaining Walls?
Universal Columns (UC) have flanges of roughly equal width to the section depth, creating a near-square H shape. This symmetry means the sleeper sits centrally in the channel, and the post resists bending equally in both directions. UC sections are the most popular choice for retaining wall posts.
Parallel Flange Channels (PFC) have a C-shaped cross-section with flanges on one side only. PFCs can be used in pairs (back-to-back) to form an improvised H shape, but this is more labour-intensive and generally not necessary when UC sections are readily available. PFCs are better suited to structural framing applications.
For most retaining wall projects, we recommend UC sections. Contact us for a quote if you’re unsure which profile suits your project.
Common Galvanised H Channel Post Sizes
The table below summarises the UC sizes we stock for retaining wall applications:
100UC14.8 — 97 × 99 mm, 14.8 kg/m. Ideal for garden walls up to 600 mm.
150UC23.4 — 152 × 152 mm, 23.4 kg/m. Suited to walls 600 mm – 1.0 m. The most popular all-round retaining wall post.
150UC30.0 — 158 × 153 mm, 30.0 kg/m. A heavier 150 section for higher loads or wider post spacings.
200UC46.2 — 203 × 203 mm, 46.2 kg/m. Required for walls 1.0 m – 1.5 m or where engineering specifies a larger section.
250UC72.9 — 254 × 254 mm, 72.9 kg/m. Heavy-duty posts for tall walls, commercial projects and engineered designs above 1.5 m.
Benefits of Hot-Dip Galvanising
All of our retaining wall H channel posts can be supplied with a hot-dip galvanised finish to AS/NZS 4680. The galvanising process involves immersing the steel in molten zinc at approximately 450 °C, creating a metallurgically bonded coating that protects the steel in several ways:
Barrier protection: The zinc layer physically separates the steel from moisture and oxygen.
Cathodic protection: If the coating is scratched or damaged, the surrounding zinc sacrificially corrodes in preference to the underlying steel, preventing rust from spreading.
Longevity: In typical Melbourne soil conditions, a standard galvanised coating can protect buried steel for 30–50+ years with no maintenance required.
